Most Planetpress Customers don’t Document their Workflows.
It’s as simple as that.
The reason is that it’s a very time-consuming thing to do and you can always open the configuration and have a look at the process. This is fine until
- … someone tries to Audit your business/IT processes (usually when they are trying to value your business) or
- … the original programmer leaves and someone has to pick-up the maintenance or
- … your process gets more complicated and LOTS of steps get added.
If you’re looking for a rogue setting it’s a bit more of a problem to look through 183 steps than looking through (say) 20.
I know, because I’ve done it loads of times.
When I used to document a workflow I’d need to open each plugin dialog; take a screenshot; copy and paste it into Word, write a few sentences explaining what it did. It would usually take me several days to do it properly, and then I’d only concentrate on the most important processes.
So the last time I had to do it I decided to do something about it. I developed a series of utilities and tools that would help me generate a properly auditable description of each process and the overall workflow. It took me quite a while but it was worth it! As far as I know no-one else can do this.
I can now use these tools to generate comprehensive process documentation for all current versions of PlanetPress Workflow … in less than a tenth of the time it took me before. This cost saving makes it viable for you to have a really useful security, audit and maintenance document at a very reasonable price. I supply the documentation as a Word document so that you can log changes moving forward.
